HistoryThe 36-hectare Anderson Park occupies the former Napier Park Racing Club grounds in Greenmeadows, established in 1886. The racecourse was once home to Moifaa, the New Zealand thoroughbred who won the 1904 Grand National at Aintree — one of horse racing's great underdog stories. Racing ceased around 1960 and Napier City Council acquired the site in 1962. The current destination playground opened in July 2018 following a community-led master plan process developed from 2015 and construction beginning December 2017.

CultureAnderson Park Playground was designed by Boffa Miskell in close partnership with a disabilities reference group, with the brief to create an all-abilities space where "people of all ages and abilities" could experience similar activities at varying challenge levels. The project came from a 2015 community master plan and involved hundreds of public submissions — including community suggestions for the playground name. The playground opened in July 2018 and the Napier 150th anniversary in November 2024 prompted further park improvements including a new cafe area and upgraded amenities.

We loved everything about this park. It is a park that can cater to all ages and all disabilities. There's a playground with a flying fox and a skatepark. Theres also water features too. Toilet facilities, bbq area. We definitely recommend this park if you havent been before.

A large, well thought out playground for children of many ages. A highlight was defintiely the music area - with the various interactive instruments. There is a big flying fox, two huge slides with steps easy for children and adults to climb, swings, a smaller toddler play space and a special area dedicated to children and adults with additional needs. The public toilets were very clean and tidy too. There is also a huge park across the little creek that runs through which was very picturesque.

It was a rainy day which is the only reason no one appears in the photos. It's usually quite busy here. There is a tower with two slides. There are places for kids with various types of disadvantages can still enjoy the playground. There is a splash pad. In fact, be careful where you sit. Sometimes cheeky kids can get the water to spray beyond the splash pad radius. There are also plenty of private toilets. It's a great place to have fun. There's even a basketball hoop and a skate park area. It's also a great place for a picnic.

Anderson Park Playground in Napier is an excellent playground with a large variety of play equipment. Ranging from the mighty slide tower to water play and much more. There is something to entertain kids of all ages. Excellent facilities and plenty of parking. A great place to take the family on a nice day.

A fantastic free family destination for all ages! If you visit Napier this is a must see and hands down the best designed Park I've ever seen in New Zealand. There is high quality playground equipment for ALL ages and abilities, a splash pad area, a water play area, flying fox, musical equipment, volleyball Court, basketball court, skate park, a natural creek, dog areas, bbq areas, lots of shade from trees and shade sails, tables and adult seating, and 2 toilet facilities. It has been well planned and maintained and you can entertain the family for hours here, if you bring a picnic you could even make a day of it.

Huge playground with a variety of structures and areas appropriate for different ages. A go to of ours anytime we're in town with our kids. Has a toddler area, a rope climbing area set amidst trees, a tall tower with slides out the top, a couple of water play areas, plus all sorts of neat bits tucked in between.

I'd say this playground is the most amazing one that i've ever seen in NZ. Luckily I happened to visit this playground when I went to napier. You could spend a whole day there and also it's very friendly in summer as there're a lot of shades. Really worth visiting!!

Fun, well designed playground with good toilet facilities and lots of car parking. Nice seating available too and plenty of shade if needed. Waterplay activities available as well.
