Arthur Street Playground

Arthur Street Playground is a mid-sized neighbourhood playground in central Dunedin built around a standout 20 metre flying fox, with a wide slide known locally for being steep and fast.

Equipment

Equipment includes the flying fox, swings with an infant swing and a basket swing, the slide, a spring rocker, and a multi-play structure, all set on an artificial turf surface.

Access and Inclusion

The playground sits on flat, easily navigable ground in a central location, with seating available for caregivers. The artificial surface gives an all-weather accessible base, and on-street parking is available on Arthur Street, a short walk from central Dunedin amenities.

History and Cultural

Arthur Street was the site of Dunedin's first cemetery, opened in 1846, where over eighty early settlers were buried. The cemetery closed in 1858 and the remains were removed, and the site later became part of the residential streetscape. The playground itself was established between 2013 and 2017 as a community recreation space in central Dunedin.
