Caroline Bay Playground

Caroline Bay Playground is a sprawling, maritime themed play space on the Timaru seafront, built at a scale that makes it one of the biggest playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere. Locals raised its budget over five years of volunteer fundraising, and it sits inside Caroline Bay, home to the Caroline Bay Carnival, New Zealand's longest running summer carnival since 1911.

Equipment

The play area holds over 40 pieces built around Timaru's maritime past, including a fourteen metre bespoke shipwreck and a ten metre lighthouse tower with twin mega tube slides. Twin sixty metre flying foxes and twin racing slides sit beside a large space net, a wheelchair accessible carousel and a mahika kai themed area. A double cyclops swing recalls the Alexandra lifeboat, and sensory and musical panels round things out.

Access and Inclusion

Inclusive design was central to the brief. Over ninety percent of the playground is wheelchair accessible, the ground is largely flat and flush rather than raised, and seats, tables and barbecues are accessible too. Bilingual AAC boards support non verbal visitors, and the carousel and other pieces let children of mixed abilities play side by side.

History and Cultural

The playground's story reaches back to a 2019 pitch by local radio host Owen Jackson, inspired by Christchurch's Margaret Mahy Playground, which grew through volunteer committee CPlay into a multi year fundraising campaign before opening on 6 December 2023. Its design drew on mana whenua input from Arowhenua, weaving in Ngai Tahu creation narratives such as the Ara-Te-Uru waka alongside a custom whare and a Pacific inspired space. Nearby, the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden and the historic Soundshell tie the playground into the bay's older identity as Timaru's civic beachfront.

Practical Info

The playground sits within the broader Caroline Bay reserve alongside two free barbecues, outdoor gym equipment, mini golf and tennis courts, with sheltered tables and heritage storyboards close by. It's an easy walk from Timaru's town centre and the beach. The old paddling pool waterfall was removed in 2022 after 60 years once it was found to have deteriorated.
