Great park - grew up around here and spent a lot of time here. The rocking horse is well gone but there are swings, a slide, see saws (these can be dangerous so keep well away from the hinge) and there is some seating. A very large sports ground area which currently has football goal posts up. We used to fly kites here amongst the HV wires that transition the north-west end of the park beyond the school. Recommended for a visit on a sunny day. Lived across the road at 93 from age 7, my mother lives across the road in the same house from 1969 till 2024.
Halfway Bush Park
92 Ashmore Street, Halfway Bush, Dunedin 9010
Why these ages?
Infant swing suits toddlers but no fencing and see-saw hinge specifically flagged as risk by reviewer. Ashmore Street is quiet suburban but no barrier. Modest equipment; sports ground gives run-around space but limited draw. Reasonable neighbourhood stop, not a destination.
Access notes
The description explicitly states the play equipment sits on a mix of artificial and bark surfacing, so part of the play area involves loose fill that is a barrier for wheelchair users. Two reviews separately note the reserve gets boggy after rain. No accessible parking, toilet or step free path is described anywhere in the source text.
What's here
Halfway Bush Park is the main neighbourhood playground and sports reserve for Halfway Bush and Wakari, an outer hill suburb on Dunedin's western fringe. The playground has a good spread of equipment for a reserve this size: a climbing frame with a slide, a spinner, a supernova glider, a see saw and swings with an infant seat, plus a half basketball court, all on artificial and bark surfacing with picnic tables and seating.
