Te Waituarua Reserve Playground

When the Waiata Shores residential development began rising on the former Manukau Golf Club land south of Auckland, the question of what kind of community spaces would anchor it was answered with unusual ambition. The result, Te Waituarua Reserve, opened in June 2024 and gives the suburb something that most new-build neighbourhoods in South Auckland lack: a purposefully designed, culturally grounded playground funded to two million dollars by developer Fletcher Living and gifted outright to Auckland Council on completion.

The cultural centrepiece is Kaiwhare, the guardian taniwha of the Manukau Harbour, who appears in Maori tradition as a whai (stingray). The entire playground landscape is shaped around the creature: contoured landforms and planting outline the stingray's body, gills, and nostrils, while individual pieces of equipment correspond to different parts of the animal. The large moari (swing) represents the spine; the flowing and spinning play elements echo the movement of the harbour water. The collaboration between Fletcher Living, iwi representative Kathleen Wilson of Te Aakitai Waiohua, and urban designer Clynt White of Wahi Wairua gives the site a coherence that goes well beyond decorative cultural references, rooting the playground in the ecology and history of the Manukau Harbour.

The equipment itself is substantial. A Kahikatea Tower anchored by Kompan Robinia timber structures provides climbing opportunities across a range of ages and abilities. Accessible carousels including a wheelchair carousel, basket swings, and forest swings mean the playground is genuinely usable for children with a range of mobility needs. A spinner bowl, parkour elements, and an agility structure fill out the play zone and give older children more technically demanding options. The headline addition for older children and teenagers is a 120-metre BMX pump track designed and built by cycling champion Byron Scott and the Trailpro team, accommodating bikes, scooters, skateboards, and roller skates across a course that scales from beginners to more experienced riders.

The reserve is unfenced, which is worth keeping in mind for parents of toddlers and preschoolers who need closer supervision in open spaces. Pram and wheelchair access is provided throughout the site. Extensive planting, open lawn, picnic tables, and seating areas surround the playground, making it comfortable for a family half-day or longer visit. There are no on-site toilets, so planning a brief stop beforehand is advisable for families with younger children.

The address is 170 Waituarua Drive in Takanini, roughly five kilometres from Manukau City Centre and fifteen kilometres from Auckland Airport, making it straightforward to reach from the southern motorway. The surrounding Waiata Shores streets offer on-site parking, and the reserve is open year-round. A future shared path connecting the reserve to the Southern Cycleway on State Highway 1 is planned, which will eventually improve active travel links across the southern suburbs.

For families in South Auckland, Te Waituarua Reserve is already drawing visitors from well beyond the immediate neighbourhood. The combination of a culturally meaningful design, a serious BMX pump track, genuinely accessible play equipment, and generous open space gives it a quality that extends well beyond the standard new-development playground, and the strong early visitor numbers suggest the wider community has already taken notice.
