Aorangi Park

Aorangi Park's playground sits at the northern end of the netball courts inside Timaru's largest multi-sport complex in Glenwood, a straightforward stop for families already at the grounds for sport rather than a standalone destination. Equipment is compact: swings including an infant swing, a tubular slide and a multi-play structure with slide, all on an artificial safety surface.

Equipment

The play area is small but functional, with the infant swing suiting toddlers and the tubular slide and multi-play structure covering primary school ages. There is no shade over the equipment, so a hat is worth packing on hot days.

History and Cultural

The original Mountain View Road land was bought in 1953 and the Morgans Road frontage added the following year. The park was named Aorangi in 1972, honouring the Maori name for Aoraki, Mount Cook, and the district's connection to the Southern Alps. The stadium and netball courts followed in 1974, with the first sportsfields a year later.

Practical Info

Wide sealed paths connect Mountain View Road to Morgans Road through the park, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Public toilets and seating are on site, and on-street parking is available on both bordering roads. The wider complex covers athletics, bowls, cricket, football, hockey, netball and tennis.
