Betsy Eyre Park Playground

Betsy Eyre Park in The Brook, Nelson is named for a real woman who shaped the city, on land her community fought to reclaim. The small neighbourhood playground offers a slide, swings and a climbing frame on a bark surface, suited to toddlers through early primary age.

The park is bounded by Brook Street, Westbrook Terrace and Blick Terrace, within easy walking distance of The Brook's walking routes and the lower valley.

History and Cultural

The land was previously part of the Dun Mountain Railway yards, used for infrastructure storage, until residents of Blick and Westbrook Terraces petitioned Nelson City Council in 1976 to turn it into a park. It opened on 17 September 1977, named for Betsy Eyre, born Betsy Walter, Nelson City Councillor from 1956 to 1976 and Deputy Mayor from 1959 to 1971, one of the city's most influential women in local government.
