Timaru Botanic Gardens

The children's playground at Timaru Botanic Gardens sits inside 19 hectares of grounds that have been growing since 1864, entered through the ornate Gloucester Gates off Queen Street, with equipment suited to a range of ages tucked among ponds, aviary and rose garden.

Equipment

The playground shares the gardens with ornamental ponds, the Graeme Paterson Conservatory and Fernery, an aviary, the Anderson Rose Garden, a band rotunda and a War Memorial, so a stop at the swings and climbing equipment usually turns into a longer wander. Play equipment suits a range of ages, and children often drift on afterward to watch the ducks or the birds in the aviary next door. Google's visitor data shows the gardens busiest on Saturday and Sunday afternoons around 2pm to 4pm, with weekday mornings the quietest time to visit.

Access and Inclusion

Pedestrian access is available at all hours, though vehicle gates open at 8am and close at dusk, shifting from 5pm in winter out to 9pm in summer. Paths are sealed and level, linking the playground to the ponds, aviary and rose garden. The Conservatory and Fernery, open 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 2pm to 4pm on weekends, gives families an indoor option among endangered plants if the weather turns.

History and Cultural

The gardens trace back to 1864, when the Canterbury Provincial Council set aside two hectares at the request of local residents, and tree planting began in the late 1860s. The site grew to its current 19 hectares over the following century, adding a first glasshouse in 1905, the Band Rotunda in 1912 and the Graeme Paterson Conservatory in 1988. In 2014 the New Zealand Gardens Trust recognised the gardens as a Garden of National Significance. Their scale has also made them a stage for events: a four evening Illuminate light and sound show sold out three of its four nights in May 2023, drawing an estimated 12,000 plus visitors.
