Howick Domain Playground

Howick Domain Playground splits into two clear zones, a well equipped play space for older children and a separate area built for toddlers, with a standalone swing set and fitness stations lining the path nearby. It rewards a full afternoon rather than a quick stop, sitting inside one of Auckland's most storied reserves, the site around which the fencible settlement of Howick grew from 1847.

Equipment

Older children get a covered slide, climbing walls and nets, a multi play structure with a tubular slide, an in ground mini tramp, a rotonet, a climbing frame and a rocker, plus a half basketball court for pickup games. Toddlers have their own zone with a space walk, slatted barrel, rocker toys, a wobbly log bridge and a junior slide. The standalone swing set includes an infant swing and a basket swing, and fitness stations sit along the path near the corner of Howe and Moore streets, giving parents room to exercise while children play.

History and Cultural

Howick Domain sits within an area long associated with Ngai Tai ki Tamaki. In 1847 the site became the base for one of Auckland's defensive fencible settlements, when retired British Army soldiers were each granted a cottage and an acre of land in exchange for seven years of service. By 1848 the fledgling settlement held 804 people across three companies, laying the foundations for the Howick village that surrounds the domain today.

Practical Info

The playground sits in Howick, with only on street parking, so arrive early on weekends. Auckland Council runs a smokefree policy across the site. There is no shade directly over the play equipment, though established trees at the front and rear offer some shade for watching parents, and at least one picnic table sits under tree cover. A drinking fountain and picnic tables suit a longer stay.
