Jubilee Park

Jubilee Park is the social heart of Te Puke, a Bay of Plenty town about 25 kilometres east of Tauranga and widely known as the kiwifruit capital of New Zealand. The park sits in the middle of town, tucked behind the New World supermarket on Commerce Lane, and connects directly to the main shopping street via the Te Puke Heritage Walkway. The walkway was recently refurbished and widened, opening up what was once a narrow covered lane into a generous pedestrian link with heritage display boxes and pou marking local history. An outdoor plaza with a covered events stage sits at the town end, making the whole precinct feel like a genuine public square rather than a leftover strip between buildings.

The playground at Jubilee Park is unambiguously designed around Te Puke kiwifruit identity. The centrepiece is a six-metre Eagles Nest rope climbing tower whose tangled frame and round nest platforms are an intentional nod to a kiwifruit vine. It is the kind of structure that draws children in from across the park and keeps them coming back for another route up. Surrounding the tower are two flying-saucer basket swings large enough for a parent and child together, a single seesaw, a merry-go-round, and a fitness cube. The layout encourages group play and multiple children working around the equipment at once. For older kids and teenagers, a skate park and a basketball half-court sit nearby within the park, extending the appeal well beyond the playground age range.

The park is accessible throughout, with sealed paths connecting all areas, accessible picnic tables, and a public toilet block. The toilet facilities are shared with the Commerce Lane campervan parking area, which authorises freedom camping for self-contained vehicles, so the facilities are well-maintained and available at most hours. Parking is available on Commerce Lane and in the town centre carparks close by.

Jubilee Park works well as a base for a longer family outing in Te Puke. The Heritage Walkway links to the start of Te Ara Kahikatea, a four-kilometre loop track that crosses the historic Raymond Bridge and is suitable for walking, running, or riding. Two cafes on Commerce Lane, Dolce Bakery and The Daily Cafe, are close enough to make a coffee stop straightforward before or after time in the park. Kiwi360, the kiwifruit attraction, is a few minutes out of town for families who want more.

For a town of Te Puke size, Jubilee Park punches above its weight. The destination playground drawing families from across the Western Bay of Plenty, the covered walkway and event stage, and the mix of ages catered for make it a reliable choice for any family day visit through this stretch of the Bay of Plenty.
