Manly Park's playground sits in the beachfront reserve at the bottom of Laurence Street, a few steps from the sand at Big Manly Beach in Manly, on Auckland's Whangaparāoa Peninsula. Auckland Council calls it a well-used local favourite,1 and most families fold it into a beach day: mature pōhutukawa line the reserve, there are public toilets, and the bay goes shallow a long way out at low tide.2
Equipment
The play space is small and older. The council confirms swings and a slide,1 and one parent reported their three-year-old was happily busy on exactly those. It is a single patch of safety surfacing tucked under big trees, which suits toddlers and preschoolers better than older kids hunting for a climbing challenge.
That is about to change. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board consulted from April to May 2026 on renewing the equipment, safety surfacing, edging and drainage, as part of its 2026/2027 work programme, aiming for a space that works for all ages and abilities.3 The swings and slide stay; options put to the community included climbing, spinning and rocking equipment, music and nature play, and hanging or flying play such as bars and zip lines.3
Practical Info
Toilets and parking are close, and the beach is a short walk, which one reviewer singled out. Big trees shade much of the play area, and the open lawn alongside suits a picnic. The play area is open rather than fenced, and the car park road to the boat ramp runs close by, so keep little ones in sight.
The Manly Sailing Club, established in 1964, runs regattas and learn to sail programmes off this beach,4 so there is often something to watch on the water. For a bigger play session, Edith Hopper Park on Ladies Mile, under a kilometre away, reopened in 2025 with a cabin tower with dual slides, a wheelchair-accessible carousel and an in-ground trampoline.5
