HistoryThe name Matahourua connects the Cannons Creek park to the founding voyage of Aotearoa: it was aboard Matahourua that Kupe's wife Kurumarotini first sighted the land and called out "He Ao! He Aotea! He Aotearoa!" , giving the country its name. The renaming followed the earlier official rename of the adjacent Calliope Crescent to Matahourua Crescent in April 2022.
