South along the coast, Shorland Park in Island Bay still centres on the pirate ship slide generations of local kids have climbed, a short walk from the shops and easy to reach by bus. North in Tawa, Grasslees Reserve adds a bike track and water play to its swings, best on a calmer day when the valley wind drops. Parking is tightest around the waterfront and Oriental Bay on weekends; the hill suburbs and Tawa are easier. Spring and summer bring a stiff northwester through the harbour mouth at Titahi Bay and Whitby, so the bush-edged plays hold up better than the open coastal ones on a blustery afternoon. Heretaunga Park's quieter multi-play climbing structure suits a shorter suburb stop, and Maoribank Park's infant swing and glider work for toddlers through to primary age. Poets Park, on the Remutaka Cycle Trail near Moonshine, is an easy riverside stop for kids to run off energy between rides. Splash season runs summer only; the rest of the year, the bush-backed parks are the better wet-weather pick.
