Middle Earth Adventure Park

Middle Earth Adventure Park is a one-of-a-kind community-built playground nestled in a private pine forest at the end of Rua Avenue, off Hydrabad Drive in Waitarere Beach. Built by local residents and volunteers using recycled and upcycled materials, it offers a genuinely wild play experience unlike any council-maintained park.

Equipment

The park is constructed almost entirely from rope, wood, and salvaged materials. Equipment includes a flying fox, zipline, rope swings, tree-trunk balance beams, climbing ladders and frames, monkey bars, boat and jet-ski repurposed as swings, a quad-bike roundabout, handmade huts built from fallen branches, seesaws, and an arrows-marked obstacle course winding through the trees. A separate fairy garden with gnomes and decorations provides a gentler space near the entrance. Older children can follow the marked route for a challenging full obstacle course.

Access and Inclusion

The forest setting provides natural shelter from wind and light rain, though the site is unsuitable during thunderstorms. Street parking is available on both Hydrabad Drive and Rua Avenue. Sturdy strollers can navigate the entrance path. Equipment is not officially safety-rated; visitors play at their own risk, and parental supervision is essential for younger children.

History and Cultural

The park was created through community effort by a local resident and volunteers, reflecting the grassroots spirit of the Waitarere Beach community. No council maintenance or health-and-safety inspection is carried out. The site is listed on Kids On Board and Family Action as a notable free family destination in the Horowhenua region.

Practical Info

Entry is free. Street parking on Hydrabad Drive and Rua Avenue. No toilets on site. Visitors are encouraged to bring food and picnic on site. The forest provides shelter in mild weather. Play at your own risk.
