Opanuku Reserve is a quiet green corner of Henderson, West Auckland, where a small playground sits beside the Henderson Valley Road car park and big old trees line the lawn down to the Opanuku Stream. It suits a short play with preschoolers, then a walk, rather than a whole morning on equipment.
Equipment
The council describes a modest set: a climbing frame, a tunnel and a slide, on bark, aimed at preschool and junior ages.1 Older primary kids are likely to outgrow it fast. The appeal here is the space around it: wide mown lawn for a ball game or picnic, and sealed paths that link the entrances, the playground and the adjoining Henderson Park.1
History and Cultural
The stream the reserve is named for is in the rohe of Te Kawerau ā Maki and carries the name of Panuku, one of their oldest ancestors.2 That story is also the theme of a new playground Auckland Council is planning in Henderson Park next door, under the Unlock Henderson programme.3
Practical Info
There are two car parks off Henderson Valley Road and seating inside the reserve.1 The play equipment itself has no shade, so bring hats and sunscreen in summer, although mature trees nearby give somewhere cooler to sit.1 Toilets are in Henderson Park by the Wilsher Crescent car park, open 7am to 9pm, with a drinking fountain close by.4 Visitors note Wilsher Crescent is the easier place to park and that the streamside tracks get muddy after rain, so gumboots help.
Dogs are banned on the playground and must be leashed near it and in the car park, but can be off leash in the wider reserve, which makes it a handy dog walk.1 The 6 km Opanuku Path starts here and follows the stream through Henderson Park,1 and the longer, buggy-friendly Opanuku Stream Path heads on through native bush where kōwhai flower around October and tūī, fantails and kingfishers call.5 For a bigger playground, Tui Glen Reserve's treetop-themed play space with tree huts and a double flying fox is under a kilometre away.6
