Sputnik Playground

Sputnik Playground sits within Lions Park on Te Anau Terrace, right alongside the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau, with a flying fox and a run of swing options that make it one of the more complete play stops in Fiordland for children of most ages.

Equipment

The playground has a multi-play structure with slide, a climbing net, a flying fox, a basket swing, a you-and-me swing for paired carer and child play, an infant swing, a spinner, and a ship's wheel, all on a bark safety surface. The flying fox is the feature most visitors mention.

Access and Inclusion

Angle parking is available on-street along Te Anau Terrace, with easy flat access from the carpark into the lakeside park. Public toilets, a barbecue under a shade gazebo, picnic tables, and seating are all on site, and tree shade covers some of the equipment and seating.

History and Cultural

The playground was established before 2009 and has long served as a hub for Te Anau families and Fiordland visitors. The Lions Club of Te Anau played a founding role and has maintained and expanded it over the years, and the lakefront setting with the Fiordland mountains behind gives the site a distinctive backdrop.
