History and Cultural

The playground dates from before 2009, but its centrepiece, a vintage shunter locomotive long associated with Woodend, was given new life through a community led redevelopment completed in 2021. The project brought together Waimakariri District Council, the Waimakariri Youth Council, Woodend School, and the Waimakariri Access Group, along with local residents, to rebuild the play area around the restored engine, now fitted with a platform and short stretch of track.

Owen Stalker Park sits on Rangiora-Woodend Road within the wider Woodend Recreation Reserve, which also holds sports fields, tennis courts, and a skate half-pipe. On site facilities include public toilets and a barbecue, with on street parking along Rangiora-Woodend Road. Dogs are allowed under voice control. Shade over the play equipment itself is minimal, though young trees planted nearby may provide more cover as they grow. The site follows Waimakariri District Council's smokefree policy.
