Elephant Park

Elephant Park is Rangiora's most distinctive neighbourhood playground, anchored by a life-sized pink fibreglass elephant that doubles as a climbing feature alongside a life-sized tractor, with a full modern play set suiting toddlers through to primary school age.

Equipment

A multi-play structure with slides, swings including infant swings, a spring toy, a junior multi-play structure with its own slide, and a centrifuge swing sit on bark safety surfacing around the elephant and tractor centrepieces. The junior structure and its slide are sized for young children, and the nearby toilets include a nappy change table.

Access and Inclusion

The park sits at the corner of White Street and Blackett Street, with on-street parking nearby. Established trees shade both the play equipment and the seating areas. Public toilets with nappy change facilities, a drinking fountain, and picnic tables are on site, and a pathway and cycleway run through the reserve. Dogs are prohibited.

History and Cultural

The Rangiora Junior Chamber of Commerce installed the elephant in 1965, originally grey before being repainted in its now familiar pink. A logging truck with a crane was needed to lift it into place. When a plan surfaced to rename the site White Street Reserve, a protest led by local children kept the Elephant Park name in use, and it has remained a fixture of the town ever since.
