A concrete whale has watched over the sand here since the 1960s, missing nothing as generations of Nelson kids have grown up climbing through its open mouth. Locals call this corner of Tahunanui Beach Reserve arguably the city's biggest playground, a full day out with sand, surf and play equipment within steps of each other.

This is a very popular spot when the weather is good. On one side you have a long sandy beach and on the other you have a succession of play areas for kids; from the big slide to trampolining, a water park and go karts. There is also a cafe/diner for exhausted parents and plenty of green spaces including tennis courts nearby. It gets very busy at times but access is facilitated by an adequate car park and the local taxis are usually around.

I dont have kiddies anymore, they've all decided to grow up on me. However whenever I walk past to go to the beach, all one can hear is the wonderful joyous sound of kids playing & enjoying themselves...which is kinda the point ! There is plenty of age appropriate items to play on, including a skate ramp & basket ball court for the older ones. There are also beach volleyball courts just up from the playground, with plenty of toilets & changing rooms available.

Reviews mentioned there being a water park. I wanted my children to enjoy the water without going onto the beach. When we got there - there wasn't any water play facilities. Please install some.

Great for big and little children. Lots of different equipment to play on.love the musical instruments too. Toilets are extremely clean n tidy. Beach is safe & flat- great spot for all the whanau. Great any time of the year. Love it when Mr Whippy visits!

Probably one of my favorite spots in Nelson. Beach is accessible, food options near the area, lots of free parking, free toilet, huge playground, skating rink, parks, picnic tables, etc. Good for a stroll, biking or chilling.

Hired 2 bumper boats 1 ran out of petrol at 7 minutes and was filled up and away but by the time it got to the other boat that one ran out of petrol, this is now at 9 minutes and now was told that the time was up. We complained to management and after 5minutes we received $20 back Good on them for the partial refund.

Great place to take the grandkids. A lot of fun for all. Handy having the toilet close also. Just a short walk to the coffee shop for a refresher.
