Taramea Bay

Taramea Bay's playground sits within Taramea Bay Reserve on the Riverton coast, built for a fully exposed, sandy, high water table site. Equipment spans a basket swing, a spring surfboard, a slide, balance logs, an inground carousel, a log scramble, a spinner, and access to a pump track, on a mixed artificial and bark surface. A fenced junior area keeps toddlers separate from the wider equipment, making this a large, family scaled stop on the Southland coast.

The playground opened within the last five years as part of a redevelopment of Taramea Bay Reserve. The exposed coastal setting means there is no shade over the play equipment, picnic tables, or seating beyond a single cabbage tree offering limited cover for spectators, so sun protection is worth bringing. Southland District Council's smokefree policy applies at the site.
