Whalers Gate Playground on Karamea Street sits within the Whalers Gate neighbourhood on New Plymouth's western coastal fringe, a suburb whose name carries the echo of the shore-based whaling industry that once operated along this stretch of the Taranaki coast. Karamea is also the name of a settlement on the South Island's West Coast, and place names that recur across New Zealand often trace the routes and references of both Maori tradition and early European settlement. The neighbourhood itself is a post-war residential development that fills the coastal plain between the city centre and the sea.
