Playgrounds in Taranaki

A few streets from the shops, New Plymouth Central Playground packs the district's broadest equipment lineup into one reserve: a waterplay area, flying fox, trampoline and spring rocker under shade sails. Bell Block runs a different pattern at Hickford Park, where a play structure for toddlers through primary schoolers sits beside the skatepark, so older kids peel off to the ramps while littles stick to the swings and roundabout. Kawaroa Park does it at coastal scale, its fort, pump track and sculpted climbing hill strung along the Coastal Walkway. Inner suburbs stay smaller and closer to home: Audrey Gale Reserve in Merrilands pairs its play area with the Waiwhakaiho River for a swing and slide stop that stretches into a longer walk, and Ngamotu Beach Playground trades river for surf, its basket swing and see saw set right on Ocean View Parade.

Parking is easy almost everywhere except around Pukekura's gates during the Festival of Lights each summer. Kawaroa's splash pad channels its runoff to the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre next door on Tisch Avenue, which doubles as the wet weather fallback with its indoor hydroslides and toddler pool. Bell Block sits far enough out that Hickford Park rewards a deliberate trip, worth pairing with the bike track and skatepark next door. Inland suburbs like Vogeltown and Merrilands run leafier and calmer, a fair call on the days the coastal strip catches the worst of the wind.

At Ōpunake's beachfront playground the standout piece is a rubber mountain shaped to echo Mount Taranaki's snow-capped profile, with kids scrambling its slopes, talking tubes and a slide back down, right where the coast catches the wind off the Tasman. Inland at Eltham, Soldiers Park keeps it simple, swings and a slide in a small-town green just off State Highway 3, a useful split-stop between New Plymouth and Whanganui.

Hāwera itself holds two options a few minutes apart. King Edward Park runs a storybook theme, a bronze Wendy statue paired with a Lions Club pirate ship, a tree fort and an old naval cannon kids climb over, plus a shaded sandpit and water play. Queen Elizabeth Playground nearby is the quieter, low-key green space for a shorter stop. Four playgrounds, spread wide across Surf Highway 45 and SH3 rather than clustered in one town, so plan the coastal stop for a calmer morning and save the inland ones for when the wind picks up.

Broadway's glockenspiel clock chimes a few minutes from the reserve that carries Stratford's entire playground offering. Victoria Park Playground lines up a rocket-shaped climbing frame, a learn-to-ride track and a run of multi-play structures right beside the district's pump track and skate bowl, built for a full visit rather than a quick swing stop. The wider Victoria Park grounds around it add shaded picnic tables and toilets, with parking at the same gate.

Everything sits off one car park, so older kids can loop the pump track while younger ones stick to the climbing frame and slides without crossing the reserve to check in. Tucked under Mt Taranaki's foothills in dairy country, Stratford gets sharp weather swings; the shaded corners here dry out fastest, and weekday afternoons after school pickup are the quiet window before the bikes arrive.
