HistoryWhalers Gate Playground is in the Whalers Gate suburb, named after whalers allocated land there in 1847. By 1860 it was known as "The Whaler's Gate". Barrett Road honours Dicky Barrett who came to Ngāmotu in 1828 and acted as intermediary between Māori and the New Zealand Company. He was gifted land by his father-in-law, Māori chief Ererua Te Puke Ki Mahurangi, on marrying the chief's daughter Wakaiwa.
