Access notes

The inground carousel is explicitly described as flush mounted and genuinely accessible to wheelchair users and prams, and the approach from the river trail is called stroller and wheelchair friendly. The wider play area is surfaced in bark though, a barrier once off the flat trail, and there are no public toilets on site yet.

Equipment

Avon Park playground is built around an inground carousel, a flush mounted spinning disc that riders of any height, including wheelchair users and children in prams, can get onto directly from the surrounding surface. It sits on the upper terrace of the Otakaro Avon River Corridor in Avonside, Christchurch, and is one of the newest and most significant play spaces to open in the city in recent years.

A big space with a few different types of equipment. Also includes a bathroom. At the time of writing it's next to a work site but the playground itself is very pleasant

This area when completed is going to be a fantastic facility for us poor Eastsiders. It is nearly equal to what I've seen in Australia. Still a bit of work to do but worth a visit over the joliday period.

Lovely natural looking space for a play midst kids bike ride. Have to do a detour around the local streets at the moment and the dogs scare me to be honest.

Very dark. Unsure how children would play without falling down and becoming estranged from parents. Excellent water fountain. Harrowing.

Google maps took us to a cul de sac behind the park which was confusing and unappealing. We found the park by going down Avonside Drive and it was a bit of a let down. I wouldn't feel safe if I was there on my own with my toddler. The equipment wasn't great and there was no shade. There are much better options.

Avon park is mid-makeover however I love that they've allowed public access to the finished areas ahead of the rest opening. So calm and lots of big open space. Would be great for any family (especially once the pump track and basketball court are completed)

This rather large playground is not suited for small children. Great for 3 years and up I recommend.
