Avebury Park

Avebury Park is a mid-sized playground on Eveleyn Couzins Avenue in Richmond, anchored by a rocktopus climber, a junior embankment slide and a spring-mounted play item, plus swings with an infant seat, making it a solid stop for toddlers through early-primary kids, with a seasonal paddling pool for summer.

Equipment

The playground sits on an artificial surface covering about 220 square metres. A rocktopus climbing structure and spring toy suit toddlers, while the junior embankment slide and infant swing round out the younger end. A fully fenced paddling pool opens seasonally in summer, a rare extra for a neighbourhood-scale park.

History and Cultural

At the centre of the wider reserve stands Avebury House, a two storeyed timber homestead built in 1885 for the Flesher family. Christchurch City Council bought the property in 1948, and after decades as a youth hostel and a near demolition scare, the Richmond community pushed for it to become a community venue, reopening in 2002. The Canterbury earthquakes damaged the building again, but it was strengthened to full modern standard and reopened in 2013, with the avenue of mature lime, elm and oak trees around it giving the park a settled character. The Richmond Community Garden, established after the earthquakes, occupies a working corner of the grounds.

Access and Inclusion

An infant swing serves younger visitors, and a sealed path connects the playground directly from Eveleyn Couzins Avenue, keeping pushchair access straightforward on the flat site. Dogs must stay at least a metre from the pool and play equipment.

Practical Info

Public toilets, a drinking fountain, a picnic table and bicycle stands are on site. Parking is available on Eveleyn Couzins Avenue, with buses serving the wider Richmond area. The Otakaro Avon River Corridor begins nearby, linking the park into a longer network of river paths, and Avebury House itself is available for venue hire.
