Great wee place
What's here
Balfour Sports Ground sits at the heart of Balfour, a small rural settlement of around 140 people in the Waimea Plains of Southland, about fifteen kilometres southeast of Lumsden on State Highway 94. The sports ground is the social and recreational centre of this tightly knit farming community, set between the Hokonui Hills to the east and the Mataura River to the west in a landscape of productive agricultural land used for sheep, beef, deer, and dairy farming. Balfour lies on the main road that links Gore with Lumsden and continues on toward the tourist gateway to Milford Sound, and the sports ground reflects the community's long tradition of hosting visitors and looking after its own.
