The children's playground at Motunau Beach occupies part of The Parade reserve, the foreshore strip at the end of the road that winds down from State Highway 1 through Greta Valley to the coast. Motunau is one of North Canterbury's quieter holiday settlements, a small cluster of baches and permanent homes gathered around a tidal river mouth on the Hurunui coastline, about an hour north of Christchurch. The Parade is the social and functional centre of the settlement, and the playground, picnic area, toilets, and boat-launch ramp are all concentrated along this short strip of grass and gravel at the water's edge.
