Cog Park

Cog Park is a well-equipped toddler and family playground on Evans Bay Parade in Hataitai, Wellington, set on reclaimed land between Hataitai Beach and the Evans Bay Yacht Club. The play area is fully fenced and offers a mix of active equipment suited to children from toddlers through to mid-primary school age.

Equipment

The playground includes a pirate ship multi-play structure with slide, a carousel, swings with infant and basket swing options, climbing frames, see-saws, and balance equipment. The surface combines grass and sand. A separate fenced junior zone gives the youngest visitors a contained space to play.

Access and Inclusion

The park is gated at two entrances to keep animals from straying onto the road. The fenced junior area is suitable for toddlers. An off-leash dog exercise area, a tennis court, and sea views over Evans Bay round out the site. Off-street parking is available on site.

History and Cultural

The park is named for a large iron cog wheel from the Patent Slip winding gear used to haul vessels out of the water on the Evans Bay foreshore. The land was reclaimed in two stages in the 1950s and 1960s, with the northern half initially used for boat building before being converted to a grass area and community park in the early 1970s. The cog was rescued when the original slip was sold for scrap and eventually returned to the park, which has carried its current name since.

Public toilets are on site. Parking is available on Evans Bay Parade near the park. Wellington City Council smokefree policy applies to the playground area. The park adjoins Hataitai Beach, making it a natural add-on to a beach visit on warmer days.
