Kirk Park Playground

Kirk Park is Diamond Harbour's recreational hub, pairing a renewed playground with a boules court and two tennis courts on Waipapa Avenue.

Equipment

The playground was renewed with a modular play set featuring a slide, a tunnel, climbing features and monkey bars, alongside a separate rocker, a spinner and a swing set with a basket swing and two standard seats. Natural wood balance beams add a tactile element, and an accessible picnic table plus an accessible footpath connection make the site easy to navigate.

Access and Inclusion

The accessible picnic table and footpath connection support a range of visitors, and the basket swing gives younger children a supported option alongside the standard seats.

History and Cultural

Diamond Harbour's Maori name is Te Waipapa, meaning flat water, a reference to the sheltered character of this Lyttelton Harbour bay. European settlement began in 1844 when the Greenland brothers leased the land from local Maori, with the area formally settled from 1850 as part of the Canterbury Association's colonisation programme.

Street parking is available on Waipapa Avenue. The boules court and two tennis courts give adults their own activity while children use the playground.
