Korora Park Playground

Korora Park Playground in Ahipara is anchored by a giant whale sculpture, the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and just the second of its type in the world after one in Spain.

Equipment

Alongside the whale, the playground has a flying fox, a tunnel, a spinner, swings including a basket swing, a multi play structure with slide, a crows net, balance equipment, a seesaw, a junior play boat, an inground trampoline and a pump track, on bark surfacing with shade sails over the equipment.

Access and Inclusion

Public toilets, a barbecue and picnic tables are on site, with off street parking. The playground sits adjacent to the beach.

History and Cultural

The whale and wider design, by Playco Playgrounds, reference the humpback whales that migrate through the waters off Ahipara and the local landmark Maunga Whangatauatia. The 2022 upgrade quadrupled the site's size from the previous playground, following decades of community interest in a proper play destination for the town. A new pump track opened nearby around the same time.

Far North District Council operates a smokefree policy at the playground, part of the Te Hiku Open Spaces Revitalisation Project.
