Why these ages?

Fully fenced destination playground - reviews repeatedly emphasize parents can 'relax a little' and 'let kids roam free'. Explicit 1-11yo range, bike/scooter loop for young riders, in-ground trampolines, basket swing, treehouse tower. Fence removes road/car park risk. Ideal 'let them loose' toddler park. Tween equipment limited beyond climbing net.

Madills Farm sits in a natural amphitheatre above Kohimarama, and the fully fenced destination playground at its southern end lets kids run free with the whole bowl of sports fields as a backdrop.

Good to know

  • HistoryMadills Farm was lagoon and raupo swamp before European settlement, called Waipara ra (duck water) by Māori. Farmer William Madill leased 119 acres from 1919, giving the reserve its name; Council did not complete purchase of the reserve land until 1959, and a children's playground opened on 3 hectares of the site in 1964.

  • HistoryThe Melanesian Trust Board first planned to subdivide the Madills Farm land for 550 residences and shops back in 1943, decades before Auckland City Council actually bought the reserve.

  • HistoryBetween the 1940s subdivision plan and Council finally buying the land, the site sat derelict and was used as a landfill, earning it the local nickname 'dust bowl' before Council completed the purchase.

Madills Farm Recreation Reserve is a wonderful spot for anyone looking to enjoy some outdoor time. The park features a nice jogging path, perfect for a morning run or a leisurely walk. It's a popular place for kids to play cricket and soccer, adding a lively atmosphere to the area. Families frequently walk their dogs, creating a warm and friendly vibe. The neighborhood around the park is lovely, and the people are just as welcoming. There’s plenty of parking available, and the grass is always well-maintained, making it a great place to relax and enjoy nature.

A great gated park close to the beach. There are no barbeque facilities here but there is plenty of benches where one can hold a party.

This is a really great place to meet with local friends for a walk with your dog(s) and then flop down with a blanket and a couple of beers and relax afterwards. Or you could play soccer or take your kids for a play at the great jungle gym area, etc. Great local restaurants and takeaways are near by, and of course Kohimarama Beach is a 5-min walk away.
