Malvern Park Playground

Malvern Park is one of the three main parks in St Albans, Christchurch,¹ and its playground is a down to earth neighbourhood one: a long timber fort under big old trees, with a row of outdoor gym stations beside it so parents can train while the kids climb. The park runs off Innes Road on the northern side of the suburb.²

Equipment

The centrepiece is a weathered wooden play tower of several low decks joined by a blue crawl tube, with a slide at each end, a metal ladder, a slatted ramp and short steps between the platforms. Beside it stands a blue swing frame, and the council's asset register lists a baby swing, a seesaw and climbing equipment alongside the slides and swings. Everything sits on loose bark chip inside a timber edge.

The low decks suit under-fives, and one parent watched a toddler play happily while school-age children used the same structure. Another visitor found the playground well maintained, with a good variety of equipment.

Practical Info

Mature trees along the boundary fence shade parts of the play area, and one visitor read in the shade while parked alongside. The play area opens straight onto the lawn and path rather than sitting inside its own fence, so keep an eye on toddlers who bolt. The fitness stations stand on a concrete pad by the path, with a bench nearby; bark chip makes the play equipment hard going for wheelchairs and buggies. Rutland Reserve, under a kilometre away, makes a second stop on the same outing.
