Monro Playground

Monro Playground in the Opawa area of Christchurch carries a memorial story behind its name, a simple neighbourhood play space with a see-saw, a slide, and swings that include an infant seat.

History and Cultural

The playground was gifted to Christchurch by the parents of Thomas Hugh Erie Monro, a former Opawa School student who drowned at Waikuku Beach in 1932. The family bought the corner site at Opawa Road and Garlands Road and donated it to the city in his memory.

Practical Info

Seating is on site, and established trees offer some shade for spectators, though not over the play equipment itself. On-street parking is available nearby.
