Nepal Reserve in Burnside has two separate playgrounds a short walk apart: a sunny main play area off Westpark Drive and a smaller one under the big trees at the southern end, with a dirt bike track looping across the grass between them. It is a roomy neighbourhood park on Christchurch's northwest side, and one reviewer found it mostly quiet even at weekends.
Equipment
The northern playground is the bigger of the two. The council asset register lists a four-bay swing set with two baby seats, a roundabout, a seesaw, a spinning bowl, a slide, climbing walls and a chin-up bar.1 It sits in a loose-fill pit ringed with shrubs, with two green shade canopies along its southern edge.
The southern playground is a small tower with ladders, a climbing wall, a fireman's pole and two slides, next to a cantilever tyre swing and a two-bay swing with one baby seat.1 Between them the two areas suit toddlers through to confident climbers, though one parent felt there was not much equipment for such a large space.
The BMX track is a short beginner-grade dirt loop, easy enough for younger kids on small bikes.2 One family called the bike track and the two play areas a big hit with both the little one and the bigger kids.
Practical Info
There are no toilets, so plan around that. Reviewers also note the open lawns catch the wind from every direction, so bring a layer. Neither play area looks fenced from above, but the main one is set well back from Westpark Drive across open grass, where there is street parking. Paths cross the reserve to the streets on its south side, and the reserve has benches and picnic tables.
Friends of Nepal Reserve hold a working bee on the first Sunday of the month, 10.30am to midday, if you want to help look after the place.3
Kendal Reserve Playground is about 500 m away and Twyford Reserve Playground around 650 m, handy for a second stop.
