Playground at the lake

The playground beside Lake Tekapo splits into two zones: one holds swings and passive equipment, the other centres on a flying fox long enough to hold school age children's attention well past the first run. Slides, a basket swing, a rope swing, a spring toy, and a tubular slide round out the equipment, set on a gravel surface with the turquoise lake and Southern Alps as a backdrop, suiting ages from about three upward.

Equipment

The flying fox anchors one zone and is consistently the site's biggest draw, popular enough to queue on fine summer days. The second zone holds swings, including an infant swing and a basket swing, plus a rope swing, a spring toy, and a tubular slide. Gravel covers the ground throughout. The layout was rebuilt into these two distinct zones under Mackenzie District Council management.

Practical Info

The playground sits on Lakeside Drive in Lake Tekapo village, at 710 metres elevation on the lake's southern shore, immediately next to the Four Square supermarket and a short walk from the Church of the Good Shepherd along the lakefront. Off street parking and toilets are close by, and a gazebo nearby provides covered picnic space, though the play equipment itself has no shade. Mornings and evenings can be cold even in summer at this elevation, and the site gets busiest around midday on fine days.

History and Cultural

Lake Tekapo draws heavy tourist traffic travelling State Highway 8 between Christchurch and Queenstown, and the playground sits at the centre of the village's retail and lakefront strip. The wider drawcard is the lake's turquoise glacial water, the 1935 built Church of the Good Shepherd, one of the country's most photographed buildings, and the Mackenzie Basin's International Dark Sky Reserve status, all of which bring families through the village as much as locals use the playground.
