About Mackenzie

What it's like for kids.

Twizel's playground sits right on Market Place, the square at the heart of a planned hydro town, so parking is close and the walk in is short. A community mosaic trail, a native wrybill and the local Ohau mistletoe among the tiles, is going in nearby for when the climbing frame gets old. An hour south in Fairlie, the Village Green pairs a fenced playground with a skatepark and an old train carriage on the same patch of grass beside State Highway 8. Out at the lake, Tekapo's playground splits a swings zone from a flying fox long enough to outlast the first run.

Basin distances are real: Tekapo, Twizel and Fairlie sit close to an hour apart, so plan around the drive rather than one loop. The nor'wester picks up most afternoons, and Tekapo's exposed lakefront catches it worse than Twizel's sheltered square, so mornings suit littles best. Fairlie's playground got a 2025 fence and shade sails along the highway side; Twizel's community pool next door is the easy wet-weather backup.
