Rotokare Park is a small neighbourhood playground at 7 Walsh Road in Westown, positioned near the Barrett Domain reserve. The bark-surfaced site includes a bowl rocker, swings with an infant swing, and a seesaw, with a picnic table on site. The reserve was established or significantly upgraded around 2016.

Access and Inclusion

Street parking is available on Walsh Road. The small, calm setting is well suited to toddlers and young children. NPDC operates a smokefree policy across all its green spaces.

History and Cultural

Rotokare is a Maori place name meaning "rippling waters," referring to the lagoon at the heart of the nearby Barrett Domain. The domain was donated to the New Plymouth community in the early twentieth century by a descendant of the English pioneer Richard Barrett, who came to Ngamotu in 1828 and married into the local Maori community. Fred Cowling later gifted a two-hectare kauri plantation to the city in the 1940s, now a highlight of the Barrett Domain walkway.
