A flying fox beside one of New Zealand's most dramatic volcanic backdrops is not a combination you find every day. Roy Turner Memorial Playground in Waimarino, the small Central Plateau village most travellers know as the gateway to Tongariro National Park, delivers exactly that: a properly equipped community play space with a direct sightline to the Tongariro volcanic cone and, on clear days, Ruapehu rising above the bush.

The playground is located on the corner of Millar Street and Buddo Street in National Park. It is actually beside the school there. The playground is quite new and is fairly large, with quite a few different areas to play on. There is a beautiful view of Tongariro National Park with Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe in the background. It is hidden behind the village and doe get really dark at night.

The only downside, no toilet around, is far out weight by the excellent playground equipment. Also there is a nice BBQ and big grass field to play around. Loved it

Awesome for kids and there's even an area adults can test their strength in

A wonderful Park as it caters for different age groups. The part catering for older kids is like a ninja warrior layout, with multiple flying foxes and challenges to build upper body strength. There's equipment here we haven't seen anywhere else.
