South New Brighton Park

South New Brighton Park playground is built around a seven metre rope and timber climbing tower rising straight out of the grass in this coastal Christchurch suburb, and on a clear day the Southern Alps are visible from the top. That scale, plus a flying fox that consistently draws a queue, sets this playground apart from most others on the city's eastern coast and makes it a genuine destination rather than a quick local stop.

Setting and access

South New Brighton (Te Kai a Te Karoro) sits on the eastern side of Christchurch, bordered by the Avon Heathcote Estuary to the south and Pegasus Bay to the east. The park is at the end of Beatty Street beside the South Brighton Community Centre, about 20 minutes by car from the city centre, with street parking on Marine Parade and dedicated car parks near the community centre. The New Brighton Pier, the longest ocean pier in Australasia, is visible along the coast to the north. A jetty extends from the park out over the estuary, a calm spot for watching wading birds, and South Brighton Beach is a short walk away.

Equipment and play

The rope climbing tower is the centrepiece: nets, ladders, bridges and a tunnel make up the superstructure, with a climbing wall and bird nest platforms extending from the main frame, all set on a bark surface. The flying fox runs alongside and is regularly picked out by visitors as one of the better ones in Christchurch. Two slides, baby and inward facing swings, a spinning bouncy seesaw, a basketball court and a small skate section round out the play zone. The layout spreads across open grass, giving older children room to move freely between pieces, though the site is unfenced with no formal shade.

Practical info

A free barbecue, picnic tables and drinking water make this a practical choice for a longer outing, and public toilets are on site. Wheelchair hire and accessibility mats are available on request via the North Beach Residents' Association through the surf club. Christchurch City Council operates a smokefree and vape free policy across the playground.
