Te Karoro Karoro Reserve

A small, low-key play space in the coastal reserve on Marine Parade, Te Karoro Karoro Reserve gives South New Brighton kids something to climb before or after the beach. This is a quick stop in Christchurch rather than a destination playground: the sea a short walk away is the real draw, with the equipment as a bonus.

Equipment

The Christchurch City Council asset register lists a climbing wall made up of eight sections, two solo spinners and a swivel balance board, all in service.¹ The climbing wall sections were recorded as commissioned at the end of 2010.¹ There are no swings, slides or toddler pieces on the register, so it suits school-age kids and confident preschoolers more than babies. The council's surface register shows about 189 square metres of woodchip under the equipment.²

Practical Info

The council lists benches outside men's and women's toilets at its South New Brighton Beach site, within about 150 metres of the play area.³ Street parking runs along Marine Parade.⁴ We have no photos of the play area yet, so we can't vouch for shade or fencing; assume it is open to the road side and keep little ones close. The Southern Pegasus Bay Track follows the dune crest along this coast, and dogs can be off leash on the track and beach under effective control, worth knowing if your kids are nervous around dogs.⁵ One recent visitor came mainly for the beach, getting their feet in the Pacific with a dog along.

History and Cultural

Te Karoro Karoro, the seagulls' chatter, is the original Waitaha name for the Brighton Spit, built from sand the Rakahuri and Waimakariri rivers carried to this coast.⁶
