Sunkist Bay Park is the little beachside playground at the bottom of Sunkist Bay Reserve in Beachlands, out on Auckland's Pōhutukawa Coast, and most families come for the setting as much as the play: a tidal beach, two boat ramps and a wharf, with open water and islands out in front.1 Reviewers keep coming back to the same words: quiet, rarely busy, and a lovely spot to watch the sun go down.
Equipment
The council lists it simply as a playground for young children, and its own news site calls it a sweet play space for the little ones, so think preschoolers and early school age rather than big climbing towers.12 From the air it is a compact patch tucked under a canopy of mature trees beside the lower car park, which keeps it shaded on hot afternoons, a point reviewers mention too. Older kids can shoot hoops on the basketball half court at the Wakelin Road end of the reserve.1
History and Cultural
The reserve's Log Cabin was built in 1929 as a holiday home by the Grove family and is now used by community groups.3 Beachlands itself began in the 1920s as a seaside getaway for Aucklanders, and long before that the headland between Sunkist Bay and Shelly Bay was Te Kawau, a fortified pā in Kahawairahi, the traditional name for the area.4
Practical Info
Toilets and changing rooms sit right by the playground (open 7am to 9pm in summer, 7am to 7pm in winter), with picnic tables alongside.1 Car parks are reached from the top and bottom of Ealing Crescent, the lower one right beside the beach. Dogs are banned on the playground and must be leashed near it.1 The beach is about 300 metres of sand that grows as the tide drops, backed by a seawall walkway lined with pōhutukawa.3 Check Safeswim before a swim: algae warnings have affected this bay, and one reviewer found the water murky. Beachlands Domain Playground, about 600 metres inland, makes an easy second stop.
