Houpara / Sutton Park is a big, open neighbourhood park in Māngere East, Auckland, with a small playground tucked into its northern corner just off Vine Street. The lawn is the real draw here: the council describes plenty of room for kids to run around with a ball, and spots under the trees for a picnic.1
Equipment
The council lists a playground, a basketball and volleyball court, and a picnic table with seating.1 Aerial imagery shows the play pieces grouped on their own surfaced patch beneath a stand of large trees, which shade part of it, and a curving path leads from the play area towards Vine Street. The courts sit a short walk away across the grass, so older kids can shoot hoops within sight of younger ones on the playground.
History and Cultural
The Māori name Houpara came from mana whenua through the council's Te Kete Rukuruku naming programme. It is the name of Pseudopanax lessonii, a native shrub or small tree that once grew in the area.2
Practical Info
You can walk in from Vine Street or Tennessee Avenue, and parking is on the street only.1 No fence shows around the play area on aerial imagery, and it sits close to Vine Street, a through road, so watch runners near that edge. One reviewer calls it their local and another rates it handy to the dairy; a small block of shops sits at the nearby intersection. Sutton Park School's playground is about 300 metres away, and Yates Park is just over half a kilometre off if you fancy a second stop.
