Moyle Park's Māori name, Te Ara Tāwhana, means "the curved pathway", after an ancient track down to Te Ara-rata creek, once a favourite waka mooring and a place to gather eel and whitebait.1 Today it is a sports park in Māngere, Auckland, squeezed between houses and the south-western motorway, home ground of the Manukau Magpies rugby league club,2 with a small preschool playground beside the fields.
Equipment
The council lists a junior play module with climbing and a slide, plus a seesaw and a swing set with one belt swing and one bucket swing.1 It is rated for preschool and junior ages, and the bucket swing makes it workable for toddlers, but there is not much here to stretch older primary kids. Surfacing is bark.
Practical Info
The playground is not fenced and sits right beside the busy sports fields and the driveway into the car park,1 so keep runners close when cars are moving. Nearby trees give plenty of shade.1 Toilets and changing rooms stand between the car park and the fields; they and the Bader Drive car park gates keep the same hours, 7am to 9pm in summer and 7am to 7pm in winter.1 On foot, walkways come in from Watchfield Close and Elmdon Street, and one stretch runs alongside the creek where local children hunted frogs and tadpoles until the early 1970s.1 Dogs are banned on the playground and must be leashed near it, though the wider park areas are off-leash.1
A visitor describes it as open and clean, an easy place to park up and watch the kids play. For a second stop, Vickers playground is about 500 m away.
