Taupahi Reserve Park

Taupahi Reserve is a small, bark-surfaced neighbourhood playground on the bank of the Tongariro River in Tūrangi, best suited to toddlers and young children. Classic equipment includes swings with an infant seat, rockers, and a see-saw, easy to watch over from a single spot given the reserve's compact size.

Access and Inclusion

On-street parking is available on Taupahi Road. The reserve is small and quiet, easy to supervise from one vantage point, with no shade over the play equipment, so sun protection is worth bringing in summer. Taupō District Council's smokefree policy applies here as across its other green spaces.

History and Cultural

Taupahi takes its name from a historic fishing camp on the Tongariro River, one of the most culturally and ecologically significant waterways in Ngāti Tūwharetoa territory. Tūrangi itself was built in the mid-1960s to house workers for the Tongariro Power Scheme; the name comes from Tūrangitukua, a Ngāti Tūwharetoa war leader who expanded the iwi's presence in the region in the 16th century. Ngāti Tūrangitukua and Ngāti Tūwharetoa remain tangata whenua here, with Hīrangi Marae as a central gathering place.
