Te Kapua Park

Te Kapua Park in Tūrangi is home to one of the district's most distinctive playgrounds, a culturally themed papa tākaro built in 2023 through a collaboration between Ngāti Tūrangitukua and Taupō District Council. A rocket shaped climbing frame and a multi play structure with slide draw on stories of the nearby Tongariro River and surrounding maunga, and the play suits ages 2 to 12.

Equipment

Alongside the rocket climbing frame, the playground has a multi play climbing structure, a multi play structure with slide, see saws, and a full swing bank including an infant swing, all set on a bark surface with a basketball court beside it.

History and Cultural

The park sits on Ngāti Tūrangitukua land and serves as Tūrangi's central community park. The 2023 playground's design themes were drawn directly from local iwi stories about the Tongariro River and the mountains around the town.

Practical Info

Te Kapua Park also has tennis and basketball courts, a skate park, and the Tūrangi Turtle Pools at its southern end, plus picnic tables and on street parking, though the playground itself has no shade over the equipment.
