Tauranga and Wharepai Domains

A compact, fenced playground sits amid the lawns of the historic Tauranga and Wharepai Domains, a civic reserve that has spent well over a century as the city's communal backyard, host to sports clubs, ANZAC commemorations and open air concerts, with layers of Māori and colonial history running beneath the grass.

Equipment

The play area centres on a multi-play structure with a slide and a separate climbing structure for older children to scramble over. Swings cover a range of ages, with a standard bay plus an infant swing seat for toddlers, and a spring loaded see-saw suits younger kids. The junior friendly gear sits inside a fenced area, keeping the smallest visitors contained.

Access and Inclusion

An accessible entrance leads into the play area, and the fenced junior zone is a genuine plus for parents of toddlers, letting little ones explore independently. The ground surface underfoot is bark rather than poured rubber, worth noting for wheelchairs and prams. Off street parking is available for unloading prams and picnic gear.

History and Cultural

This ground was occupied by Ngāi Tamarawaho and Ngāti Tapu hapū before European settlement. Archaeological work at Wharepai Domain has uncovered pre European remains, including kōiwi, large kūmara pits and buildings, evidence of occupation that ended abruptly in 1828 when a Ngāti Maru raid devastated the community here.

Tauranga Domain dates to 1873, established after residents petitioned the Native Minister for a public park, with neighbouring Wharepai Domain added in 1878. The ground later became the city's sporting hub for cricket, football, bowls, tennis and hockey.

Its landmark is the First World War Memorial Gates, opened in December 1921 and inscribed with the names of local men who fell. The gates stand near a carved poupou honouring tangata whenua, unveiled at the south entrance in 2013.

Practical Info

There is minimal shade over the play equipment, so sun hats and sunscreen are worth packing. Dogs are allowed across the domain, useful for combining a playground stop with a dog walk. Off street parking is on hand, and the site falls under the council's smokefree policy.
