Taylors Bay Reserve puts a small sand-based playground a few steps from the Manukau Harbour, at the bottom of Bluff Terrace in Hillsborough, Auckland. Families come for the combination: a short play for little ones, a sheltered beach to explore, and wide harbour views across to Māngere Mountain.
Equipment
The play area sits in a bed of soft beach sand beside the shore. Its centrepiece is a weathered timber tower built from rough-hewn poles, with a ladder of timber rungs up one side and a long stainless steel slide down the other, plus a log frame alongside it. A separate timber swing frame stands beside it. The kit is modest and suits toddlers and younger primary-age children; reviewers keep describing it as a playground for younger children, so school-age kids after a big climb will find more elsewhere.
Practical Info
The car park is a small loop right next to the play area, and reviewers rate parking as easy. Public toilets are close to the playground (reviews are mixed on how clean they are), and one visitor mentions a shower as well. Large trees around the lawn give some shade, and there are picnic tables and benches looking out over the bay. Neither the play area nor the beach is fenced, so watch toddlers who head for the water.
Tides shape the visit. At high tide the bay is calm and sheltered, and one regular rates it as a launch spot for kayaks and paddleboards. At low tide it drains to broad mudflats and the rocky shoreline is crusted with oyster shells, so this is not a swimming beach and sturdy shoes help. A timber boardwalk and coastal track lead around the bay towards the Waikōwhai Walkway, which makes an easy walk after playtime. Bins can overflow on busy weekends, and a couple of reviewers noted works on and around the reserve in recent times.
Pallister Reserve is about 400 metres away if the kids want a second playground on the same outing.
