Keith Hay Park

Keith Hay Park is one of Auckland's largest reserves, a sprawling sports ground in Mount Roskill where the southern playground gives families a full age range of equipment under generous shade sails, a rare comfort on this exposed, open site.

Equipment

The southern playground carries a climbing frame, a junior slide, an embankment slide and a full swing set with a basket swing and an infant swing alongside the standard bays. Large shade sails cover much of the equipment and some seating, useful given how open and exposed the wider park layout is.

Access and Inclusion

Accessible toilets sit right at the playground, and a basketball half-court occupies the middle section of the park. Three separate car parks, off Arundel Street, Rainford Street and Noton Road, spread arrival points so the main entrance does not bottleneck on busy weekends. The park connects directly to the Southwestern Cycleway and the wider Puketāpapa Greenways network, and bus routes 68 and 27W both run close by, giving car free access rare for a park this size.

History and Cultural

The land became the Metropolitan Playing Area in 1956, built to give Auckland's post-war housing boom somewhere for organised sport, and was renamed Keith Hay Park in 1959 for Keith Wilson Hay, mayor of the Mt Roskill Borough Council from 1953 to 1974, who oversaw much of the surrounding suburb's development. That sports-ground origin still shapes the park today: fields, courts and paths have grown up around the original 1950s footprint over the decades since, with the playground itself an established fixture rather than a recent addition.

Practical Info

Onsite amenities include two drinking fountains and seating, and the park operates under a smokefree policy. With three car parks and cycleway access, this is one of the easier large Auckland parks to reach without driving right up to the playground, worth factoring in if weekend parking near the Arundel Street entrance is full.
