Tiraumea Drive Reserve is two spaces in one quiet corner of Pakuranga, Auckland: a small neighbourhood playground on the grassy island reserve inside the Tiraumea Drive loop, and a big open riverside park a short walk away on the Tamaki Estuary. Come for the playground if you live nearby; come for the riverside if you have a dog or a young waka paddler in the family.
Equipment
Auckland Council's asset register lists a public-access playground on Tiraumea Drive Island Reserve.1 From the air it is a compact, timber-edged pad of loose surfacing holding what looks like a slide and a low swing frame, with a large tree shading one corner. It suits a quick play for under-fives and early primary ages rather than a day out, and one reviewer of the wider park wished it had a proper children's playground. There is no fence, and the road curves past a few metres from the pad, so keep little ones close.
Practical Info
The riverside park, which the council calls Tiraumea Park, has a car park, picnic tables and bins, and reviewers describe its open grass as an off-leash dog area where dogs can swim in the river. The council register also places a public toilet there,2 though a recent reviewer still asked for toilets, so check before you rely on it. Shade is scarce in summer. The Pakuranga Outrigger Canoe Club (Te Tahawai O Pakuranga) is based at the reserve and trains on the estuary, so the car park can fill on club days.3 For a second play stop, Millen Avenue Reserve is under a kilometre away.
