A wooden fort with a heron figure on its top post stands right on the sea wall of Panmure Basin, so this small fenced playground in Mount Wellington, Auckland, looks straight out across the water. It sits by the Ireland Road car park near the sailing club, one of three playgrounds spread around the basin.1
Equipment
The centrepiece is a roofed timber tower with a round porthole window, a pair of side by side slides off one deck and a third slide running off the far side. That is most of it: this is a compact sliding and climbing set rather than a destination, and visitors describe it as small and simple. It suits preschoolers and younger school kids best; older children will want the skate park and fitness stations further round the loop.1
Access and Inclusion
A black mesh fence with a gate encloses the play area, which matters here because the tidal basin and its sandy beach are only a step below the timber retaining wall. In visitors' photos the ground under the tower is sand, not rubber, so wheels will struggle inside the fence, but the sealed path outside is flat and pram friendly.1 There is no shade sail; the big trees behind the fence are the only cover.
Practical Info
Toilets by the car park are open 6am to 8pm daily, with picnic tables and a drinking fountain alongside, and there is a jetty and boat ramp at this end.1 The car park is gated at night, so check the council page for current hours. Dogs are banned on the playground and must be leashed near it.1 One parent kept their kids out of the water because it looked murky, though others were swimming.
The playground opens onto the path around the basin, a tidal estuary inside a volcanic crater, which takes about half an hour on foot.1 The full loop has been walkable again since the Te Kōpua o Hiku footbridge opened in July 2025, three metres wide in place of the old one metre Jubilee Bridge.2 Its name recalls the deep pool beneath it, home of the taniwha Moko-ika-hiku-waru, kaitiaki of Ngāti Pāoa.2 Peterson Playground is about 600 metres away, and Lagoon Pool and Leisure Centre on Lagoon Drive runs a hydroslide at weekends with free swimming for kids 16 and under.3
